  • Balboa 1

This intro to Balboa class is perfect for those with no Balboa experience, or if you wish to review basic principles and figures of this dance.

Balboa is a partnered swing dance from the 1930s, particularly from the beach-side resort Balboa in Southern California. Because of crowded dance floors with rules prohibiting the larger and more exuberant Charleston style dance, Balboa was formed to take up very little space. Can be danced to quick tempos similar to fast Lindy or Charleston.

We will introduce you to the fundamental movements, technique and figures of Pure Balboa and Bal-Swing to get you out on the social dance floor.

Prerequisites: Knowledge of 6 and 8 count swing and basic partnered dance connections. (Intro to swing)

  • Balboa 2

Balboa is a beautiful dance that's wrapped in close, done with small, graceful shuffles, steps, and turns. It was another popular form of swing in the 30's and 40's, named for Balboa Island on the California coast.

In this series, expanding from what we learned on Balboa 1, you will learn the foundation movements of the dance - enough moves to dance a whole song. Vocabulary includes Lollies, Turns, Toss-outs, In and Outs, and classic Bal-Swing patterns.

    Prerequisites: Balboa 1

  • Intro to Collegiate Shag

This class is great for complete beginners to this style of dance or those who may have had a small taste at some point and want to go over basics.

Collegiate Shag (or ""Shag"") is believed to have originated from the Black community in the southern U.S. in the 1920s-1930s (possibly the Carolinas or New Orleans). It gained the descriptor ""Collegiate"" later on (1930s-1940s) as a way to describe who was dancing it (college students) or how it was danced (with the ""energy/flashiness of college students""). This is danced to snappier, upbeat tempos similar to Balboa, fast Lindy, and Charleston.

This will be an introduction to the dance form, with particular focus on the fundamentals, technique, and basic moves to be comfortable enough to get out on the social dance floor.

    Prerequisites: None

  • The Tranky Doo

In this class, we will learn the classic swing dance routine, The Tranky Doo!
This dance is learned by many swing dancers and is often danced at social dances similar to the Shim Sham!

In addition to learning this fun routine, we will break down some of the solo jazz dance steps in the dance, increasing your solo jazz dance vocabulary.

Prerequisites: Shim-sham or related solo jazz experience required. Moves from the shim sham should be known before learning the Tranky Doo. If you do not know the Shim Sham you may take this class if you are up for the challenge and a faster paced class!
